Metronidazole, an antibiotic, is used to treat bacterial vaginal infections (bacterial vaginosis). The active ingredient (an antibiotic) kills bacteria in the affected areas.

Bacterial Vaginosis is an unpleasant infection that manifests as unusual vaginal discharge, with a strong fishy odour. Your discharge may change in colour or consistency, becoming greyish-white, thin, and sometimes watery.

Metronidazole is to be prescribed by a doctor. Follow the instructions of your doctor. Always read the information leaflet in your medication packet.

Metronidazole tablets should be swallowed whole with a sip of water. Do not crush or chew the Metronidazole tablets. Take Metronidazole tablets with or right after meals. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your condition.

Even if your symptoms improve or you start feeling better, it is essential to complete the whole course of the prescribed antibiotics.

Metronidazole is an active antibiotic that contains 400mg of it per tablet. For bacterial vaginosis, the usual dose is 800mg at first and 400mg every eight hours. Children shouldn't use it for this purpose. However, the drug may help in treating other infections in children. Your doctor will advise you on the correct dose of Metronidazole.

Metronidazole should not be used in excess at all. Taking more than the required amount of Metronidazole requires informing your doctor immediately. In cases where you forget to take your dose of Metronidazole and get to remember in a few hours then take it as soon as possible. However, if you've forgotten it and it's nearly time for your next dose, then leave the forgotten one and carry on as normal.

Metronidazole should not be used if you have recently consumed alcohol or taken disulfiram (Tabuse) in the last 2 weeks. Avoid alcohol and propylene glycol-containing foods or drinks while taking metronidazole. This applies to at least three days after stopping taking it. Metronidazole should not be used to treat any condition not confirmed by your doctor.

Do not take Metronidazole while your first trimester of pregnancy. Metronidazole could hurt an unborn baby, always consult your doctor before taking Metronidazole if you are pregnant.

Tell your doctor about any of the following medications you've taken to ensure this medicine is safe:

liver disease
kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis)
a heart rhythm disorder
Cockayne syndrome (a rare genetic disorder)
a stomach or intestinal disease such as Crohn's disease
a blood cell disorder such as anaemia (lack of red blood cells) or low white blood cell (WBC) counts
a fungal infection anywhere in your body, or
a nerve disorder

Like any other medicine, Metronidazole may cause the following side effects:

hives
itching
warmth or tingling
fever
joint pain
dry mouth
dry vagina
stuffy nose
difficulty in breathing
swelling in your face or throat
a severe skin reaction
